This is my first night in Kibera. I was lucky enough to get a place to stay at for the price of 600Ksh per month. The only light was the moon light which poured in through the holes in the corrugated metal roof. The hard mud floor was made shinny by the number of people who have walked on the brown surface. The hard labor of the day made me so tired none of it mattered.
The next day a beam of sunlight woke me up. James had already brought out the chaanga, a deadly strong concoction with about 50% alcohol.
“Do u want some?” asked James as he held out the nauseating beverage.
“No thanks, I have to go to work” I replied
I pushed away the drink its fumes had already made me feel sick.
As I stepped out of the shack, the reek of the one latrine slapped me. People selling cheap drugs and sniffing glue, a quarter of the people had already started drinking. My stomach wrenched in pain because of the water I had drunk the night before. Is this how I must live my life? It’s just not fair.
